Bathroom Remodeling in Harrisburg NC: What Homes in Cabarrus County Need
Harrisburg bathrooms are hitting the age where tile and grout are only half the story. Here is what we usually find in local homes, what a remodel typically costs in Cabarrus County, and how to plan the work.
Harrisburg grew fast. Most of its homes went up in subdivisions off NC 49, Roberta Road and Rocky River Road from the 1990s on, built quickly for families moving out from Charlotte and Concord. Those houses have held up well. Their bathrooms, built with builder-grade materials and now fifteen to thirty years old, are a different story.
We remodel bathrooms across Cabarrus County, and in Harrisburg the work tends to follow a pattern. A fiberglass tub-shower in the hall bath, a primary bath with a small shower and a big tub, vinyl or 12-inch tile on the floor, and, more often than people expect, some water damage hiding under it all. Here is what we see, what it costs, and how to plan.
1What Harrisburg Bathrooms Usually Need
Before we talk finishes, we look for the problems that decide the real scope. In Harrisburg homes of this age, a few come up on almost every estimate.
Signs the bathroom is mostly cosmetic
Signs there is more going on
The right column is not a reason to panic. It is a reason to open up the floor and the shower walls and fix the cause, not just cover it. Cabarrus County summers are hot and humid, and a bathroom fan that vents into the attic, or does not move enough air, keeps the room damp for hours after every shower.
2What It Costs in Cabarrus County
These are typical market ranges we see in Harrisburg and nearby Concord. Your number depends on size, layout and finish level, and it comes from a free in-home estimate.
Hall or kids bath, $13,000 to $25,000
New tub or a tub to shower conversion, tiled surround, vanity with a quartz top, tile floor, toilet, lighting and a properly sized fan.
Primary bath refresh, $20,000 to $32,000
Same layout, new tile shower, new vanity and counters, floor, lighting and fixtures. The tub stays or gets replaced.
Primary bath remodel, $32,000 to $55,000
The garden tub comes out for a larger walk-in shower, double vanity, new tile throughout, upgraded glass and lighting.
Hidden repairs
If we find rot in the subfloor or framing, it is priced separately and shown to you before any work continues. It is typically a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars.
Floor tile is a place where the material choice matters. For a bathroom floor and a shower, porcelain is the safer bet over standard ceramic because it absorbs less water. Our porcelain vs ceramic tile comparison explains why.
3Doing It Right Behind the Tile
A bathroom remodel is only as good as the parts you cannot see. This is where a cheap job and a good job separate, and where DIY projects most often go wrong. We wrote about that in the hidden costs of DIY renovations. On every Harrisburg bathroom we do, we cover the same basics.
Fix the subfloor first
Any soft plywood around the toilet or tub gets cut out and replaced, and the floor gets the right backer for tile. Many homes in the area sit on crawl spaces, so we can often check the subfloor from below too.
Waterproof the whole shower
A membrane system on the walls and the pan, with the seams and corners sealed, not just cement board and hope.
Vent the moisture outside
A fan sized to the room, ducted to the exterior through the roof or a wall. It is the cheapest insurance a bathroom can have in this climate.
Check the plumbing while the walls are open
Old shut-off valves, a tired shower valve and supply lines get replaced now, when it is easy.
In Harrisburg we pull up a lot of floors that looked fine from the top. The tile is not the expensive part of a bathroom. Doing it twice because nobody fixed the water problem is.

4Timeline and Permits in Harrisburg
Harrisburg is in Cabarrus County, and building, plumbing and electrical permits for the town are handled through the county. A straight replacement of fixtures in the same place is simple. Moving a drain, adding a circuit for a heated floor or changing walls means permits and inspections.
Weeks 1 to 2: estimate and selections
We measure, check for damage and write the scope. You pick tile, vanity and fixtures, with our help if you want it.
Weeks 2 to 3: ordering and permits
Most materials arrive within one to two weeks. Permits, when needed, run in parallel.
Weeks 3 to 8: on-site work
Hall baths usually take three to four weeks on site. Primary baths take five to seven, including rough-in inspections.
After tile: glass and walkthrough
Shower glass is measured after tile and installed about one to two weeks later. Then a final walkthrough with you.
5Kitchens Too, and Choosing a Contractor
Many Harrisburg homeowners do the bathroom first and the kitchen a year or two later, or both together while the crew is already there. We also handle kitchen remodeling in Harrisburg, along with flooring and painting, so one company can plan the whole house in phases.
Whoever you hire, ask for proof of liability and workers compensation insurance, an itemized written estimate, the name of the person running your job, and how change orders are handled if they find damage. 6FAQ
What if you find water damage under my bathroom floor?
We stop, show you photos and the extent of it, and give you a written price for the repair before continuing. Most repairs of this kind are small and are handled in a day or two, but you always approve them first.
Do you remodel bathrooms in Concord and Kannapolis too?
Yes. We work throughout Cabarrus County, including Harrisburg, Concord, Kannapolis and Midland, and across the rest of the Charlotte metro.
How do I know if my bathroom fan is good enough?
If the mirror is still fogged ten minutes after a shower, or you see mildew on the ceiling, the fan is too small or poorly vented. We check where it actually vents during the estimate.
Can I keep my tub and just replace the surround?
Yes. If the tub is in good shape, we can keep it or refinish it and tile a new surround around it. It is one of the most affordable ways to update a hall bath.
Is it better to remodel both bathrooms at once?
It saves some cost on setup, trips and permits, and you only live through one project. The trade-off is being without both bathrooms at the same time, so most families stagger them by a few weeks.
