Looking fresh right now
Wide planks. Boards in the 7 to 9 inch range read calmer and modern, and they hide the repeat in the print better than narrow ones.
Warm, natural tones. Light oak and honey browns brighten a room and stay current far longer than a trend color.
Matte, low sheen surfaces. A soft finish looks closer to real wood and hides dust and scuffs much better than shine.
Water resistant cores. Worth the small upgrade in kitchens and entries. It buys you time when something spills.
Starting to look dated
Cool gray planks. The all gray look has cooled off. A warm tone is the safer pick if you plan to sell in the next few years.
High gloss laminate. Shine is what makes laminate read as laminate. A matte surface reads as wood.

It takes the abuse a family gives a floor, cleans up in seconds, and costs little enough that you are not afraid to actually use the room.
Getting the most out of it
Wipe spills quickly. Water resistant is not waterproof. Standing water at a seam is the one thing laminate does not forgive.
Mats at the doors. Grit from outside is what dulls a wear layer. A mat at each entry does most of the work.
Pads under the furniture. Felt pads on chairs and table legs prevent the scratches people blame on the floor.
Skip the steam mop. Steam drives moisture into the seams. A damp mop and a laminate cleaner is all it needs.

No. Laminate has a wood based core with a printed layer on top. LVP is plastic through and through, which makes LVP fully waterproof and laminate water resistant at best.
We steer people away from it. Standing water at a seam swells the core and it does not recover. Tile or LVP is the right call in a full bath or a laundry room.
With normal traffic and a good wear layer, many years of service. It cannot be sanded or refinished, so when it does wear out it gets replaced rather than restored.
