Bathroom Remodeling in Indian Trail NC: Tub to Shower, Costs and Timeline
The most common bathroom request in Indian Trail is simple: lose the tub, gain a real shower. Here is what that costs in Union County, which kind of shower fits, and how long you will be without the bathroom.
Indian Trail is our home. Our office is on Edgeview Drive, and a large share of the bathrooms we remodel are within a fifteen minute drive of it. The request we hear most often in town is the same one: take out the tub nobody uses and put in a shower that is easy to step into.
Most Indian Trail homes were built during the growth years from the 1990s through the 2010s, in neighborhoods off Indian Trail Road, Wesley Chapel-Stouts Road, Sardis Church Road and along the US 74 corridor. Those houses tend to have the same bathroom: a five foot tub with a fiberglass or tile surround, a cultured marble vanity top and a vinyl or small-tile floor. That sameness is useful, because it makes costs predictable.
1Tub to Shower: The Three Ways to Do It
Not every conversion is the same project. The type of shower you pick decides most of the cost and the timeline. These are typical market ranges for Union County, and your exact number comes from a free in-home estimate.
| Option | What you get | Typical Indian Trail range |
|---|---|---|
| Acrylic or composite shower kit | Pan and wall panels in place of the tub, glass door, new valve | $8,000 to $13,000 |
| Tiled shower on a factory pan | Low-profile pan, tiled walls, niche, glass door or panel | $12,000 to $18,000 |
| Fully tiled custom shower | Tiled floor and walls over a waterproof membrane, bench, niche, frameless glass | $16,000 to $22,000 |
| Low-curb or curbless shower | Recessed pan, linear drain, grab bar blocking, handheld head | $18,000 to $26,000 |
A standard tub opening is about 60 inches by 30 to 32 inches, which becomes a comfortable 60×32 shower. If the bathroom has room to borrow a few inches from a linen closet, the shower can get deeper, and that is often the upgrade people are happiest with a year later.
2Should You Keep One Tub in the House
This is the first question we ask in Indian Trail, because so many homes here have young kids and so many others are empty nesters planning to stay. The right answer depends on who lives in the house now and who might buy it later.
Go ahead and convert the tub
Think twice before converting
3Planning for Aging in Place
A good share of our Indian Trail bathroom work is for homeowners who want to stay in their house for the long run. Small choices during a remodel make a big difference later, and most of them cost very little while the walls are open.
Blocking for grab bars
Wood blocking inside the shower walls costs almost nothing during framing. You do not have to install grab bars now, but you will be able to add them anywhere later.
A low or no curb
A curb under three inches, or none at all, is easier on the knees and makes the shower usable with a walker if that day comes.
A handheld shower head
On a slide bar, next to a fixed head. Useful for seated showering, for rinsing the shower, and for washing a dog.
Non-slip tile and good light
Smaller floor tile with more grout lines, or a textured porcelain, gives better grip. Add a light in the shower itself.
We wrote more about this in aging in place renovations for Charlotte area homes, including hallways and entries.
Half the tub conversions we do in Indian Trail are for people who have lived here for years and want to keep living here. I always tell them to put the blocking in the walls now. It is cheap today and expensive later.

4What the Process Looks Like With Bella
A tub to shower conversion is short on site, but there is some lead time up front. Here is how it goes from the first call.
Estimate visit
We measure the tub opening, look at the valve and drain location, check the floor around the tub for soft spots, and talk through options. You get a written, itemized estimate.
Selections and ordering
Tile, pan, valve, glass and any vanity changes. A standard pan and tile are usually available within a week or two. Frameless glass is measured after tile and takes one to two weeks.
Permit, if needed
A straight swap in the same location often needs only a plumbing permit, or none, depending on scope. Moving the drain or adding a circuit means permits through Union County Building Code Enforcement.
On-site work
Tub removal, plumbing, waterproofing, tile, grout, trim and fixtures. Most conversions take two to three weeks of work, then the glass goes in.
Walkthrough
We test the drain and the valve with you, go over sealing and care, and leave the bathroom clean.
5Choosing a Bathroom Contractor in Indian Trail
Indian Trail has plenty of contractors, and some of the ones advertising here are based an hour away. A few things are worth checking no matter who you call. Make sure they carry general liability and workers compensation, and ask for the certificate. Ask how they waterproof a tiled shower, because a tiled shower is only as good as what is behind the tile. Ask for a written, itemized scope and who pulls the permit. We covered more of these questions in how to find a trustworthy contractor.

6FAQ
How long does a tub to shower conversion take in Indian Trail?
Most take two to three weeks of on-site work, plus about one to two weeks after tile for the glass to be measured and installed. A kit-style shower can be faster. We give you the schedule in writing before we start.
Will removing my only tub hurt resale value?
It can, if the likely buyer for your home is a family with young children. Most Indian Trail homes have at least two full baths, so converting one and keeping a tub in the other is the usual answer.
Can you install a shower in the same space without moving plumbing?
Yes, and that is what keeps the cost down. The drain stays at the same end where the tub drain was, and the valve is replaced in the same wall.
Is a prefab shower kit a good idea?
For a secondary bath or a tight budget, a quality acrylic or composite kit is a sound choice. It is fast, easy to clean and has no grout. Tile gives more design options and a more custom look.
Do you work in 55 plus communities in Indian Trail?
Yes. We work in active adult communities in and around Indian Trail, and we follow each community’s rules on work hours, parking and contractor access.
