A unique hardwood project, finished with precision

Every home asks for something different before we lay a single plank. This one called for a layout that felt intentional in every direction, so instead of a standard straight run, the team set the planks on a 45 degree diagonal. The angle pulls the eye across each room and makes the whole space feel wider and more deliberate.

The boards are oversized oak. Wider planks mean fewer seams, a cleaner sightline, and more of that natural grain on display. Add the custom framing details around the transitions, and the floor reads less like a surface and more like the foundation of the room's design.

02Hardwood Trends in 2026, and What to Skip

This project is a good read on where hardwood design is heading. If you are weighing a new floor, here is what looks fresh right now and one or two looks that are quietly fading.

Looking fresh right now

Wide and oversized planks. Boards in the 5 to 12 inch range keep gaining ground. Fewer seams give a calmer, more open look that lets the grain carry the room, exactly the effect in this project.
Light and natural oak tones. Pale oak, ash, and warm honey browns lead. They brighten a space and pair with almost any furniture, which makes them the safe long term choice for resale.
Textured finishes. Wire brushed and hand scraped surfaces add depth and hide everyday scratches far better than high gloss. A practical win for busy homes with kids and pets.
Custom layouts and details. Diagonal sets, herringbone, and framed borders turn a floor into a feature. The 45 degree install here is a clear example of going beyond the basics.

Starting to look dated

Cool, washed out gray floors. The all gray look has cooled off. A warm oak is the safer pick if you want a floor that still looks current a decade from now.
High gloss finishes. Shiny surfaces show every speck and scuff, and they read cheaper than a soft, matte finish.

03How to Care for Your Hardwood Floor

A quality hardwood floor is built to last for decades, and a simple routine keeps it looking like the day it was installed. Here is the care guide we share with every hardwood client.

The simple weekly routine

Clean gently and often. Sweep, dust mop, or vacuum with a soft brush head to lift the fine grit that scratches a finish over time. For a deeper clean, use a well wrung damp mop with a wood floor cleaner. Damp, never wet, standing water is the enemy of any wood floor.

Skip the wrong products. Avoid steam mops, oil soaps, wax based products, and harsh all purpose cleaners. They dull or slowly break down the finish. Felt pads under furniture legs and a no shoes habit prevent most dents and scuffs.

Know your finish. An oiled floor can be refreshed with maintenance oil in the high wear spots, while a lacquered or polyurethane floor is cleaned on the surface and recoated only when needed. Not sure which you have? Ask us, we track it for every project.

Mind light and humidity. Wood moves slightly with the seasons, so keeping indoor humidity in a steady range reduces gapping in winter and cupping in summer. Rotating rugs now and then keeps the color even, since sunlight gently shifts the tone over the years.

04Even the Dog Approves

Here is the part nobody puts in the brochure: hardwood is one of the most pet friendly floors you can own. It does not trap fur or dander the way carpet does, it wipes clean in seconds, and dogs settle right into a warm wood floor for an afternoon nap. The whole family, four legs included, tends to fall for it.

A warm oak floor is a dog's favorite spot in the house.
Trimming a dog's nails to keep traction on hardwood floors
A quick nail trim is the simplest way to keep paws sure footed.

The one thing worth planning for is traction. Smooth floors can be slippery for dogs, especially older ones, so a few small habits keep your pup confident and comfortable.

Keeping it paw friendly

Trim nails and paw fur. Long nails and fuzzy pads are the top cause of slipping. If you hear a clacking sound when your dog walks, it is time for a trim.
Add rugs and runners. A runner with a non slip pad gives your dog sure footing in hallways and favorite paths, and protects the floor too.
Choose a tough, textured finish. A scratch resistant, matte surface holds up beautifully in a pet home. Tell us you have dogs and we will steer you to the most durable options.
Booties, toe grips, paw wax. For dogs that still struggle, these add instant traction without changing your floor at all.

People worry that dogs and hardwood do not mix. In practice it is the easiest floor to keep clean in a pet home. Pick a durable finish, keep nails trimmed, drop a runner in the busy spots, and the floor looks great for years, with the dog napping right on top of it.

05Hardwood Flooring FAQ

How do I keep hardwood floors clean?

Sweep or dust mop often, then damp mop with a wood floor cleaner. Wipe spills right away and skip steam mops and oil soaps. That simple routine is all most floors ever need.

Are hardwood floors good with dogs?

Yes. Hardwood does not trap fur or dander and wipes clean easily, which makes it one of the best floors for a pet home. Plan for traction with trimmed nails, a few runners, and a durable textured finish, and your dog will be right at home.

Can hardwood floors be refinished?

Solid hardwood can usually be sanded and refinished several times over its life, which is part of why it lasts for decades. We can tell you what your specific floor and finish allow during a visit.

Are gray hardwood floors still in style?

The all gray look has cooled off. Warm whites and natural oak tones lead in 2026. A soft gray undertone can still suit a modern room, but a warm oak is the safer long term choice.

Do you install outside Charlotte, like the Asheville area?
