Start in September, Be Done Before the Holidays

Every year the same thing happens. Somebody calls in early November wanting a new kitchen floor before Thanksgiving. Here is what actually fits in the calendar from here, and what does not.

BBB A+ Accredited 7 Years in Charlotte Metro Licensed & Insured

There are about eleven working weeks between early September and the week of Thanksgiving, and about sixteen to Christmas. That sounds like plenty. It stops sounding like plenty the moment a countertop template, a cabinet lead time and a Thanksgiving weekend land in the same month.

This is not a scare piece. Most of what homeowners in Charlotte ask for in the fall is very doable, and some of it is doable in a day. What matters is knowing which category your project sits in, because the ones with ordered materials behave completely differently from the ones with stocked materials.

Below is how we sequence a fall calendar, what we would start this month, and the point where we would tell you honestly to aim for January instead.

1The Only Question That Matters: Is It Stocked or Ordered?

Split every fall project into two piles and the whole calendar becomes obvious.

Stocked work

Flooring from inventory, interior paint, drywall repair, trim and carpentry, most bathroom refreshes. The material is available now, so the schedule is only about crew availability. These are the projects that still comfortably fit before the holidays, and in many cases before Halloween.

Ordered work

Custom cabinets, stone countertops, specialty tile, anything with a finish or a size that has to be produced for you. Here the calendar is set by the supplier, not by us, and the clock only starts the day the selection is signed off. A week of indecision on a cabinet color is a week off the end of the project.

2What We Would Start This Month

If your goal is a house that looks finished when people walk in for the holidays, this is the order we would do it in.

1

Anything that makes dust

Demolition, drywall, sanding. Dust travels, so this always goes first. Doing it after the floors go down means protecting everything twice.

2

Paint the walls and ceilings

Painting before flooring is faster and cleaner. Cut-in at the baseline happens once the floor is in, and that is a small, controlled step.

3

Floors

Now that the messy trades are out. Our one-day LVP install covers up to 2,500 sq ft in a single day when the subfloor is flat and dry, which is why it fits so well into a tight fall calendar.

4

Trim, doors and touch-up last

Shoe molding, transitions, the final coat of paint on the trim. This is the week that decides whether the job looks professional or almost finished.

3The Three Things That Actually Blow Fall Deadlines

It is almost never the installation. In seven years of fall projects around Charlotte, the delays come from the same three places.

Selections made late

Nothing gets ordered until the color, size and finish are final. Two weeks of deciding is two weeks added to the end, every time.

Surprises under the floor

An unlevel slab, a soft subfloor, old adhesive. Fixable, but it is a day or two nobody planned for.

The holidays themselves

Thanksgiving week is not a working week, and suppliers slow down around it. Building that into the plan now beats discovering it in November.

Stacking trades too tight

Drywall mud and floor finishes need cure time. Compressing them is how a fast job becomes a callback in February.

If you call us in September we can almost always make Thanksgiving work. If you call the first week of November, I will tell you what fits and what does not, and I would rather do that than promise a date we both regret.

4Why Fall Is a Good Time to Do This Anyway

September through November is the easiest stretch of the year to work in a Charlotte home, and that is not marketing. Indoor humidity finally settles back into the range where wood floors behave, which makes acclimation predictable. Paint and finishes cure evenly instead of racing in August heat. And windows can be opened for ventilation without pouring wet air into the house.

The one real constraint is the calendar itself, not the conditions. Which is why booking the date matters more in the fall than in any other season.

If you only do three things this month

Lock your selections. Color, style, size, finish. Everything downstream waits on this one decision.

Get the subfloor looked at. Five minutes with a moisture meter now prevents the two-day surprise later.

Put a start date on the calendar. Fall books up from both ends, and the last two weeks of November are effectively gone.

5FAQ

Can you really install flooring in one day?

For LVP, yes, up to about 2,500 square feet, as long as the subfloor is flat, dry and clear. The day before matters as much as the day itself, which is why we check the subfloor at the estimate rather than on install morning.

Can we live in the house during the work?

For flooring, painting and drywall, almost always yes. We work room by room and seal off the active area. A full kitchen is the exception, because you lose the sink and the range for part of it.

What if my countertop or cabinets arrive late?

We sequence so the delay costs you the least, finishing floors, paint and trim while we wait. It is the reason we set the order dates first and the install dates second.

Do you work between Thanksgiving and Christmas?

Yes, with a shorter calendar. Suppliers slow down and there are fewer working days, so December projects are best kept to stocked material and short scopes.

How far ahead should I book for a January start?

November is the right time to lock a January date. Winter fills up with the projects that did not fit into fall, so the earlier the selections are done, the better the start date you get.
